MILWAUKEE (AP) — Milwaukee is known for its love of Miller Beer, Brewers baseball, and the iconic “ Bronze Fonz” statue.
Being the deepest blue city in swing state Wisconsin, Milwaukee also has a strong affinity for Democrats.
So it may come as a surprise to some that Milwaukee is hosting former President Donald Trump and the Republican National Convention next week, while nearby Chicago welcomes President Joe Biden and Democrats in August.
This situation was further complicated when Trump referred to Milwaukee as “horrible” in a speech just a month before the convention was set to begin.
Adding to the tension, Milwaukee was initially slated to host the Democratic National Convention in 2020, but the event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Local business owners have expressed disappointment over the lack of reservations during the RNC, and protesters have criticized the city for keeping them at a distance from the convention site.
Despite these challenges, some remain optimistic about the economic opportunities and chance to showcase Milwaukee and Wisconsin during the convention.
“Folks are eager for the convention to be successful and to highlight the best of Milwaukee,” said Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson.
While there are differing opinions on hosting the RNC in Milwaukee, the city’s selection as a convention host for both Democrats and Republicans underscores Wisconsin’s significance as a swing state.
Wisconsin’s pivotal role in past elections, coupled with its current status as a battleground state, make it a focal point for both political parties.
As preparations for the convention continue, local businesses are questioning revenue projections, and demonstrators are pushing for more visibility near the convention sites. Despite the challenges, there is a sense of hope that the convention will bring positive attention to the city.
