The day’s deadliest strike came Tuesday afternoon, hitting near a gas station outside the southern city of Khan Younis in Muwasi. Officials at Khan Younis’ Nasser Hospital said 17 people were killed in that strike. Video circulating online showed people carrying bodies from a crowded street lined with market stalls. The areas nearby are packed with tent camps housing thousands of Palestinians.

DHAKA, Banglades (AP) — Media reports quoting officials in Bangladesh say at least 5 people have been killed and dozens injured during violent clashes on university campuses between members of a pro-government student body and other students over a government jobs quota scheme. Police fired tear gas and charged with batons during the clashes, according to students and authorities. Protesters have been demanding an end to a quota reserved for family members of veterans who fought in Bangladesh’s war of independence in 1971, which allows them to take up 30% of governmental jobs. Demonstrations have occurred daily since a court order reinstated the scheme suspended in 2018.

BANGKOK (AP) — Police in Thailand say the bodies of six people were found in a luxury hotel in downtown Bangkok and poisoning is suspected. Thailand’s Foreign Ministry said in a short statement Tuesday that the dead are reported to be two Vietnamese Americans and four Vietnamese nationals. They were not identified further. The Thai newspaper Matichon showed photos of police at the Grand Hyatt Erawan Hotel investigating the deaths after being summoned by hotel staff. Bangkok’s police chief said there were no signs of a struggle, and the residents of the room were supposed to check out Tuesday.
Storms with likely tornadoes slap the Chicago area, killing 1 and cutting power
CHICAGO (AP) — Storms with reports of tornadoes blew through Iowa, Illinois and Indiana, toppled trees and cut power to hundreds of thousands of people. Authorities say a woman in Indiana died after a tree fell on a home. The National Weather Service confirmed that a tornado hit Des Moines, Iowa, as storms rolled through Monday afternoon and into the night. The storms moved east into Illinois and the Chicago area and brought tornado warnings and drenching rain. Employees at the weather service in suburban Chicago had to take cover for a time. The Chicago Fire Department reports just one one serious injury from the storm.

Deceptions such as phony emails from people impersonating online retailers like Amazon are nothing new. But the Better Business Bureau says phishing attempts increase amid the heavy spending seen during significant sales events. Amazon’s two days of discounts for Prime members start on Tuesday. The Better Business Bureau advises consumers to watch out for lookalike websites, too-good-to-be-true social media ads, and unsolicited emails or calls. A spokesperson for the organization that because Prime Day is a huge moment on the retail calendar, “it represents an enormous opportunity for a scammer, con artist or even just an unethical business or organization.”
