ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. — State bareback champion Azzy Lara of Columbia Falls continued his momentum Wednesday morning by having the top bareback ride at the National High School Rodeo Finals at the Sweetwater Events Complex.
With a score of 75, Lara shares the top spot in the first go-round with Sean Mahoney of Bend, Oregon. Mahoney scored a 75 on Sunday night.
Taos Weborg of Gregory, South Dakota, and Collin Roland of Childersburg, Alabama, are right behind at 74.
Lara joined Browning’s Tahj Wells atop a leader board in the first go-round, but only temporarily. Wells scored an 82 in bull riding to lead by a half-point until Sutton Schrunk of Valentine, Nebraska, scored an 86 on Wednesday morning.

Lara won the state title with a 76. He finished third in average for the year.
Also Wednesday morning, Mitch Detton of Great Falls had a time of 10.4 seconds in tie-down roping to finish third in the session and land in 17th in the go-round, one spot behind Corvallis’ Cash Trexler. Miles City’s Caiden Gray had a score of 70 in the saddle bronc to finish sixth in a stacked session and reside in 13th place overall.
In the reined cow horse competition, Big Timber’s Mollie Mae Ruth tied for sixth with 284 and Belgrade’s Mesa Radue was 11th at 277 to open the second go-round. They were in a four-way tie for 24th after the first go-round.
Bozeman’s Sally Robb had a time of 9.94 seconds in goat tying, good for 16th in the session and 91st overall. Dillon breakaway roper Josie Robbins was 14th in the morning session with a time of 12.2 seconds to land in the 80th overall slot, one ahead of Melstone’s Kierra Hougen.
Action was to resume Wednesday night with the second go-rounds and continues through Saturday night.
