BUTTE — The Butte 100 has seen many firsts in its 17-year history dating back to the inaugural race in 2007.
Steve Sevilla is aiming for another first in the 18th edition of Butte’s mountain biking race on Saturday. If Sevilla completes the 100-mile journey, he will become the first 10-time finisher of the race, joining the 1,000-mile club.
Sevilla first participated in the Butte 100 in 2014 and has competed every year since, except for the canceled 2020 event. He became a member of the 500-mile club in 2018 and has been eyeing the 1,000-mile milestone ever since.
“That’s something that has been on my mind since I achieved the 500-mile mark,” Sevilla said.
“Once I reached that, I thought, ‘Oh, that’s fun.’ I’ve been doing it every year since then. It gave me a goal to strive for, even though it’s just a number. Each race is unique.”
