ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. — Columbia Falls’ Azzy Lara took the lead in the bareback competition on Wednesday night with a score of 74 in the second go-round at the National High School Rodeo Finals at the Sweetwater Events Complex.
Lara’s impressive ride followed his first go-round victory with a score of 75. The Montana state champion now leads the average with a total score of 149, with three days of competition remaining. Sean Mahoney of Bend, Oregon, who also scored a 75 in the first go-round, is yet to compete again.
Another standout performer from Montana is Miles City saddle bronc rider Caiden Gray, who secured second place in the evening session with a score of 74, giving him a total of 144 on two head. Gray tied for 13th place in the first go-round with a score of 70.
During Wednesday night’s second go-round, Martinsdale’s Walker Story excelled in rein cow horse, winning the session with a score of 292.5 and moving into second place in the go-round. Story had tied for 20th place in the first go-round with a score of 288.

Bozeman’s Sally Robb delivered a strong performance in goat tying, placing third out of 30 competitors with a time of 7.65 seconds. Robb had ranked 92nd in the first go-round with a time of 9.94 seconds.
Lewistown’s Kate Wiening secured sixth place in reined cow horse with a score of 288.5 and currently stands in eighth place overall in the go-round. Wiening was 40th in the first go-round with a score of 284.
In breakaway roping, Dillon’s Josie Robbins finished ninth with a time of 5.8 seconds. Robbins had ranked 83rd in the first go-round with a time of 12.2 seconds.
Barrel racer Abigail DeVos from Fort Shaw claimed 15th place with a time of 17.818 seconds. DeVos had placed 53rd in the opening go-round with a time of 17.991 seconds.
In girls cutting, Mesa Radue from Belgrade ranked 20th with a score of 63. Radue did not have a score in the first go-round.
The second go-round of bull riding began Wednesday night, with only one rider managing to score. Tahj Wells from Browning had the second-best score in the opening round with an 82, trailing behind Sutton Schrunk of Valentine, Nebraska by four points.
