HELENA — The Horse Gulch Fire near Helena experienced minimal growth in the last 24 hours while crews continued to maintain and strengthen containment lines.
The fire, caused by humans, has burned 14,250 acres since it started on July 9. As of Thursday morning, fire officials reported 32% containment, up from 23% on Wednesday morning.
According to a press release from fire officials, the main concern remains the presence of unburned fuel pockets within the perimeter that could lead to embers causing spot fires outside the established containment lines.
There was an increase in fire activity in the southwest area of the fire, resulting in a flare-up. Overnight crews worked on patrolling and securing lines, focusing on extinguishing remaining heat to keep the fire within the perimeter.
On Thursday, interior burning fuel pockets remain a significant worry due to the potential for embers to ignite spot fires outside the containment lines.
Fire officials reported that winds are expected to shift from the west-northwest to the northeast in the coming days, offering favorable conditions for crews to strengthen and secure control lines.
The structure protection group will continue working in Magpie Gulch, assessing the defensible space around properties and enhancing control lines to prevent the fire from reaching structures.
