MISSOULA — The ongoing hot and dry conditions have led officials to announce that Stage II Fire Restrictions will be implemented in Missoula County.
The Missoula County Commission made the decision on Thursday morning to enforce these restrictions starting at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, July 19.
These restrictions will be applicable to all private land in Missoula County outside the city limits, as well as federal and state lands within the county.
The following activities are prohibited under Stage II fire restrictions:
- Building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire or campfire.
- Smoking, except in an enclosed vehicle or building, developed recreation sites, or in an area at least three feet in diameter cleared of flammable materials.
- Operating lawn mowers, weed trimmers, chainsaws, and other internal combustion engines between 1 p.m. to 1 a.m.
- Welding or using torch devices with an open flame between 1 p.m. and 1 a.m.
- Using explosives between 1 p.m. and 1 a.m.
- Driving motor vehicles off designated roads and trails, except for official business related to governmental agencies and public utilities.
A press release states:
Violation of these restrictions is a misdemeanor offense. Any individual who intentionally starts a fire in violation of these restrictions will be responsible for reimbursing the county governing body or recognized protection agency for the costs incurred in fire suppression activities caused by the illegal fire and may also be liable for other civil damages.
