Thom Brennaman is set to make a return to the broadcast booth this fall, calling nationally televised college football games for The CW after being out of the business for four years, as reported by The Athletic on Sunday. Brennaman was let go from his position after making a homophobic slur during the broadcast of the Aug. 19, 2020, game between the Cincinnati Reds and Kansas City Royals. Unaware that his microphone was live, he made the comment as part of the Reds broadcast crew, leading to his dismissal from the Reds job and later from Fox Sports, where he called MLB, NFL, and college football games. Brennaman expressed his gratitude to The CW for giving him this opportunity, stating, “There are no words to describe how grateful I am that they’re rolling the dice.” He told The Athletic that he reached out to Nexstar Media Group about potential work and was surprised when they reached out to him. The CW, which is expanding its sports coverage, including college football and basketball among other events, has given Brennaman a chance to make amends with the LGBTQ+ community in Cincinnati and beyond. Cyd Zeigler, co-founder of Outsports, believes Brennaman deserves a second chance and commended The CW for their decision to hire him. Bob Costas also vouched for Brennaman, acknowledging his mistake but stating that the consequences he faced were disproportionate to his actions. Dennis Miller, president of The CW, expressed satisfaction with Brennaman’s efforts to take responsibility for his actions. Brennaman will make his debut on The CW on Aug. 31, calling the play-by-play for the Oregon State vs. Idaho State game before moving on to predominantly cover the Atlantic Coast Conference games. –Field Level Media
