What began as a fun camping trip for three childhood friends turned into a race against time to save a young man’s life from Bear Butte Lake in South Dakota.
Grace Schave, Annika Goetz, and Kaylee Miranda-Pedersen, all 17-year-olds, were spending their summer vacation before senior year at Spearfish (South Dakota) High School learning to paddleboard.
Wearing their life vests, the girls eagerly headed to the water to explore Bear Butte Lake.
Within 30 minutes, the girls spotted a boy around their age in the water. Schave mentioned that they couldn’t understand his words, but he seemed to be shouting something to his family on the shore.
The girls initially thought he was joking around with his family, but as the shouting stopped and an eerie silence enveloped the water, they felt a sense of dread.
