John Howard has witnessed a variety of experiences over his many years producing Missoula’s Homegrown Comedy Open Mic. From comics having complete meltdowns to first-timers blowing everyone away, to confessions of actual crimes, the monthly comedy show at the Union Club provided Missoulians with a platform to step on stage, test out their material, and, in many cases, transform their lives.
For the past 13 years, uninterrupted by global pandemics, Homegrown Comedy has served as a launchpad for a new generation of Missoula comedians, writers, artists, and eccentrics. It’s hard to imagine now, with a dozen comedy events hosted each month, that there was a time when the Homegrown Open Mic was the sole show in town.
