MONTANA – Montana is closing in on one of its biggest election years in recent history and among the races is Secretary of State.
Current Secretary of State Christi Jacobsen is running for reelection against newcomer Jesse James Mullen.
Proponents of CI-128, a constitutional initiative that would provide a new legal framework for protecting abortion access to Montanans, are suing the current Secretary of State for choosing not to count the signatures of inactive voters.
NonStop Local’s Matti Olson sat down with Jacobsen’s opponent to hear his response to Jacobsen’s actions and the lawsuit against her.
“We have people who are legitimate Montana voters who for some reason or another are inactive. But that does not mean that they lose their rights to have their voices heard in this state. The courts have made that clear and we hope that Christi will respect the decision that the courts have made and reverse what she did midway through the process,” Mullen said.
Mullen also argues that Jacobsen has not upheld the Montana Constitution or electoral process. He says she has politicized the position which he is firmly against.
“What we want from the Secretary of State is someone who will not politicize that office and who will follow the rules and regulations that Montanans have put in place and have voted on. We have to honor the constitution that we swear to protect and uphold when we’re sworn into office and that is what I would do,” Mullen said.
NonStop Local reached out to the Secretary of State’s office for comment on the race but we have not heard back. We will include her statements once we get a response, and we will continue to provide updates on this race and the lawsuit filed against her office in Missoula.
