The number of abortions has increased since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, as reported by the Society of Family Planning, an organization advocating for abortion rights.
Following the Supreme Court’s decision to return the abortion issue to the states in June 2022, the #WeCount report indicates a rise in the number of abortions in 2024 compared to 2023 and 2022.
“Between January 2024 and March 2024, we recorded between 94,670 and 102,350 abortions per month,” stated the Society for Family Planning.

This marks the first instance since the repeal of Roe that the organization has documented over 100,000 abortions in a single month.
While over a dozen states have implemented abortion bans leading to decreased abortion rates, the report highlights an increase in neighboring states.
“Despite the rising number of abortions, there is more to this story,” mentioned Dr. Alison Norris, MD, PhD, #WeCount co-chair and professor at The Ohio State University’s College of Public Health.

The organization, relying on data from abortion providers, notes a 20% increase in telehealth visits for abortion pills nationwide.
“Telehealth abortion services play a crucial role for individuals seeking abortion care in an increasingly restrictive environment,” stated Dr. Ushma Upadhyay, #WeCount co-chair and professor at the University of California, San Francisco.
Earlier this year, the Supreme Court upheld the availability of the abortion drug mifepristone in the U.S.
Despite opposition, the Supreme Court ruled unanimously that the plaintiffs did not have the right to contest the FDA’s decision to make obtaining the drug easier.
