Due to heavy rain and wind from Tropical Storm Debby, the first round of the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, N.C. was cancelled on Thursday. The final regular-season event of the PGA Tour will now begin on Friday at the rain-soaked Sedgefield Country Club.
The PGA Tour will provide more information later in the day following the storm. The course received 2 inches of rain in the morning and meteorologists predict up to 6 inches could fall by the end of the day.
A flash flood warning has been issued for the region.
The tournament determines the top 70 players in the FedEx Cup who will advance to the postseason. The postseason features two $20 million tournaments and the Tour Championship, with the winner of the FedEx Cup receiving $18 million. The top 50 players are guaranteed entry into all $20 million events next year.
A potential Monday finish is being considered. The PGA Tour has guidelines to try and complete 72 holes whenever possible. Another option could involve a cut to the nearest 60 players with a 36-hole final on Sunday.
