Former President Donald Trump’s presidential campaign stated on Saturday that it has been hacked and implied involvement of Iranian actors in the theft and dissemination of sensitive internal documents.
The campaign did not provide specific evidence of Iran’s involvement, but the assertion came shortly after Microsoft released a report outlining foreign agents’ efforts to interfere in the U.S. campaign in 2024.
It mentioned an incident where an Iranian military intelligence unit in June sent a spear-phishing email to a high-ranking official of a presidential campaign from a compromised email account of a former senior advisor.

Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung attributed the hack to “foreign sources hostile to the United States.” The National Security Council spokesperson stated that any reports of improper foreign interference are taken very seriously and condemned any entities attempting to undermine confidence in U.S. democratic institutions.
Politico first reported on the hack, revealing emails received from an anonymous account providing a research dossier on Ohio Sen. JD Vance, almost five months before he was selected as the Republican vice presidential nominee by Trump.
Trump campaign spokesperson, Cheung, stated that these documents were obtained illegally and were intended to interfere with the 2024 election process. He also referenced the Microsoft report on Iranian hackers breaking into a high-ranking official’s account in correlation with the timing of Trump’s selection of a vice presidential nominee.
