Brazilian authorities concluded the recovery of the bodies of the 62 individuals who perished in the tragic plane crash. The investigation into the cause of the disaster began as experts started examining the aircraft’s black boxes.
Footage showed the ATR 72-500 plane in a terrifying descent before crashing into a residential area in Vinhedo, approximately 80 kilometers northwest of Sao Paulo.
The plane, operated by Voepass airline, crashed in a nearly vertical position, causing a fiery explosion upon impact. A total of 62 bodies were recovered, with two already identified as the pilot and co-pilot.
Experts from Brazil’s Aeronautical Accidents Investigation and Prevention Center have started analyzing the black boxes recovered from the wreckage, containing crucial data about the flight.
The aircraft had undergone routine maintenance before the flight, and no technical issues were reported. However, speculation suggests icing on the plane’s wings may have played a role in the crash.
The tragic incident resulted in three days of national mourning declared by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Despite the devastation, there were no casualties on the ground.
The crash marked one of the worst aviation accidents in Brazil’s history, with all victims identified as Brazilian citizens except for one dual citizen and a family of three Venezuelans.
It was the deadliest air disaster in Brazil since the 2007 TAM airlines crash in Sao Paulo, which claimed 187 lives.
