Australia’s Olympians arrived back in their home country on Wednesday and stood up for their breakdancing teammate against harsh critics, comedians, and online trolls.
Coming off a record-breaking 53 medals at the Olympics, the athletes were questioned about Rachael “Raygun” Gunn, who was not present.
Gunn, a 36-year-old breakdancer, has faced ridicule for her performance in Paris, where she received no votes from the judges. Critics have mocked her skills and some have even called her a national embarrassment.
Late-night host Jimmy Fallon made fun of her kangaroo-like dancing and outdated Australian track suit, while New Zealand comedian Jemaine Clement joked about Australia’s dancing talent.
Despite the criticism, double gold-winning canoeist Jess Fox defended Gunn, emphasizing the toll the negative comments have taken on her.
Before the Olympics, Gunn, a university researcher with a doctorate in cultural studies, had been promoting breaking and encouraging children to pursue their dreams.
Swimmer Zac Stubblety-Cook and cyclist Matthew Glaetzer also spoke out against the criticism of Gunn, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese praising her effort and commitment.
“She did her best and represented her country. Some of the criticism she has faced is unfair. Good on her for participating and wearing an Australian tracksuit,” Albanese said.
