On Saturday, eBay announced to its customers that it will no longer accept American Express as a payment option on its platform. The company cited the “unacceptably high fees” charged by American Express as the reason for this decision after careful consideration. You can read more about this change here.
In an email sent to customers, eBay informed that American Express will no longer be a form of payment on the site, and any American Express cards saved on accounts have been removed.

Customers were encouraged to add alternative payment methods such as PayPal, Venmo, Apple Pay, and Google Pay. Visa, Mastercard, and Discover were also suggested as viable payment options in place of American Express.
The company assured customers that any purchases made with American Express before August 17 would still be valid and processed as usual.
Feedback on the change was swift
American Express responded to the decision in June on their website, expressing disappointment in eBay’s choice to cease accepting their cards. They mentioned that the cost of acceptance for American Express is similar to what eBay pays for other card networks in the US.
On eBay’s community forum, a user stated, “My purchases on eBay will decrease significantly as Amazon and other sites accept American Express.”
