The University of Houston has announced the appointment of Eddie Nunez as its new athletic director. Nunez, who previously served at the University of New Mexico, has signed a five-year contract with the title of vice president for intercollegiate athletics. He will be officially introduced at a press conference in Houston on Wednesday. President Renu Khator expressed her confidence in Nunez, stating, “Eddie Nunez brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success in college athletics. His leadership will play a crucial role in advancing our athletics programs, improving the student-athlete experience, and continuing the positive momentum at the University of Houston.” Nunez, who served as athletic director at New Mexico since 2017, led the school to 22 Mountain West Conference championships and 53 NCAA Tournament appearances. Prior to his role at New Mexico, Nunez spent 14 years in the athletic department at LSU, where he was involved in facility upgrades and multimedia deals. Originally from Miami, Florida, Nunez played basketball at the University of Florida under coach Billy Donovan. The previous athletic director at the University of Houston was Chris Pezman, who parted ways with the school in June. –Field Level Media
