BOZEMAN, Mont. – The Gallatin County Sheriff’s Search & Rescue Dog Team is seeking volunteers to assist in the training of their certified search dogs.
Regular practice is essential for search dogs to maintain their skills in finding lost individuals. Volunteers can participate by acting as “lost people” for air scent dogs to locate, laying tracks for tracking dogs, or creating challenging training scenarios for handlers.
The upcoming training event will take place in Bozeman on September 7, focusing on searches for lost toddlers or elderly individuals with dementia who may wander from their homes.
The SAR team operates in Gallatin County and nearby areas, providing assistance in searches for lost hikers, missing children, individuals with cognitive impairments, and victims of drowning and avalanches.
Training sessions typically last from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., varying based on the season, weather conditions, and location, with sessions continuing through September.
Individuals interested in volunteering and spending time with search dogs are encouraged to contact the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Search & Rescue Dog Team for more information.
