Amanda Gorman delivered a powerful message of unity and love in her new poem at the Democratic National Convention. She painted a portrait of a country “worthy” of the “American dream” without explicitly mentioning any names or parties.
Gorman’s poem, titled “The Sacred Scene,” focused on the ideals of unity, family, and love as the true roots of the nation. She emphasized that regardless of religion, class, or color, Americans are one family bound by love and empathy.
While Gorman did not mention Kamala Harris by name, she has a history of sharing poems that promote togetherness on stages connected to the vice president. Her previous poem, “The Hill We Climb,” was recited at President Joe Biden’s inauguration, making her the youngest-ever inaugural poet.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Gorman revealed that she initially planned a poem for Biden’s reelection campaign before he endorsed Harris. This led her to create a new poem centered on hope and the possibility of having a Black-Indian woman as president.
Through her performance at the DNC, Gorman highlighted the importance of coming together around shared values and principles, whether within the roots of society or at events like the convention. Her message emphasized the idea of daring to dream together for a better future.
