The Democrats’ star-studded, four-day convention came to an end with Vice President Kamala Harris accepting the party’s nomination for president. Although most speeches were accurate, there were some false claims that need further examination.
Let’s take a closer look at some of those claims.
Trump’s stance on abortion ban
VICE PRESIDENT KAMALA HARRIS claimed that Trump would “ban medication abortion and enforce a nationwide abortion ban regardless of Congress.”
THE FACTS: While Trump has expressed support for a national abortion ban in the past, he recently stated on Fox & Friends that he would leave the issue up to the states. He has also emphasized his commitment to states’ rights in a video on his Truth Social platform.
Despite previous statements supporting a national abortion ban, Trump has indicated varying positions on the issue over time.
Trump and Project 2025
COLORADO REP. JASON CROW linked Trump to Project 2025, but Trump has distanced himself from the initiative. Although Project 2025 is not officially tied to any candidate, it has connections to individuals in Trump’s circle.
Claims about Trump’s alleged plans to do Putin’s bidding and replace national security professionals also need more context and evaluation.
Trump’s alleged comments on military service
ARIZONA SEN. MARK KELLY echoed allegations that Trump referred to members of the military in derogatory terms, but the veracity of these claims remains disputed and inconclusive.
Walz’s achievements as governor
MINNESOTA SEN. AMY KLOBUCHAR highlighted Tim Walz’s accomplishments as governor, including signing legislation on paid family leave, free school meals, and a tax cut. While these achievements are notable, some critics question the characterization of the tax cut as the largest in state history.
Bill Clinton’s job creation record
FORMER PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON cited job creation statistics since the end of the Cold War, attributing a significant majority of new jobs to Democratic administrations. While the numbers support Clinton’s claim, the broader economic context and factors influencing job growth require further analysis.
Trump’s comments on punishing women for abortions
ALEXIS MCGILL JOHNSON raised Trump’s previous statements on punishing women for having abortions. Trump initially made controversial remarks on this topic during his 2016 campaign, but later reversed his position to focus on punishing abortion providers instead of women.
Associated Press writers Melissa Goldin, Josh Boak, and Steve Karnowski contributed to this report.
