Billings is offering assistance to homeowners dealing with a noxious weed that is widespread in yards across the city.
Funded by a $25,000 grant from the Montana Department of Agriculture, the City of Billings has contracted “buckthorn slayers” to schedule appointments and clear properties of this invasive plant.
The removal crews are experts and tailor their strategy based on factors like the size, location, accessibility, weather conditions, and soil type of the plant. The fall season is optimal for identifying and eradicating the problem plants because buckthorn leaves remain green while others have changed color.
Once the buckthorn is removed, the contractor will clear all cut brush and transport it to a city-owned site for chipping and disposal.
The cleared area will be reseeded with grass to restore the landscape.

Homeowners who invest in replacement shrubs can receive reimbursement. The maximum reimbursement per property is $100 with submission of receipts and proof of purchase.
Property owners need to be present during the removal process to discuss which plants should be undisturbed or minimally disturbed.
Homeowners should be informed about the potential substantial change in yard appearance before buckthorn removal begins, especially if a high quantity is present.
Buckthorn was initially introduced for its beauty, but its berries are harmful to wildlife and lack nutritional value. Its invasive nature disrupts ecosystems and threatens native plants and wildlife habitats.
Efforts to remove buckthorn are crucial to prevent further spread and protect the environment. To schedule an appointment, call Prorover at (406)698-6551.
The City of Billings will be reaching out to property owners in buckthorn-populated areas to inform them about the program through letters and brochures.
