The deli meat company Boar’s Head is currently under investigation by law enforcement officials for a lethal outbreak of listeria food poisoning. The U.S. Agriculture Department has disclosed this information in response to requests for government records. Despite requests, USDA officials have refused to provide The Associated Press with documents regarding inspections and enforcement at a closed plant in Virginia and inspections at eight other Boar’s Head factories. The USDA has cited concerns that releasing these records could interfere with ongoing law enforcement proceedings. So far, the outbreak has claimed the lives of 10 individuals and left more than 50 others ill in 19 different states.
