HYSHAM, Mont. – Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (FWP) has added 414 acres to the Isaac Homestead Wildlife Management Area, enhancing recreational opportunities in Treasure County. This new addition connects with existing FWP-managed land and expands the wildlife management area to over 15,000 acres. Its prime location near the Yellowstone River offers valuable access to this resource.
Governor Greg Gianforte and regional FWP Supervisor Brad Schmidts recently celebrated the acquisition by embarking on a hunting trip. Gianforte highlighted the importance of increasing access in areas like the lower Yellowstone, which he referred to as “access deserts” along the river.
“I’m incredibly proud of the work FWP is doing to increase access, particularly in the lower Yellowstone, a tremendous resource with access challenges. We prioritize working with private landowners to create strategic access points, opening up recreational opportunities for Montanans, benefiting local communities, habitat, and wildlife,” Gianforte expressed.
For the past six decades, FWP has partnered with landowners in Hysham to foster a thriving environment for wildlife and agriculture.
Steve Atwood, Area Wildlife Biologist for FWP, emphasized the collaboration with local farmers in creating a thriving environment for wildlife. “This area is utilized by many animals. We work with a local farmer who farms the property and in return, does habitat work for us, benefiting pheasants, white-tailed deer, and turkeys,” Atwood explained.
FWP will continue to work with farming families like the Lackmans to maintain the cooperation between agriculture and hunting industries in Montana. Despite not bagging any game on his pheasant hunt, Governor Gianforte expressed gratitude for the area’s beauty and looks forward to a return visit.
