BILLINGS — When Kevin Hamm discusses his campaign for Montana’s eastern U.S. House seat with Democrats, the question of whether a gay man can win often arises.
It’s akin to asking Evel Knievel on the ramp if the jump is too much. In the eastern district primary, there are four Democrats running. Everyone except Hamm, before entering the race, deemed it unwinnable by the existing candidates.
Unlike others, Kevin Hamm, the first to file, didn’t doubt the capabilities of his competitors. He stands firm in his belief that he can win.
Hamm expressed, “I wouldn’t be in the race if I didn’t think I could win. It’s surprising how many allies harbor internalized homophobia. We need to move past that mindset.”
