China expressed on Friday its concern about Taiwan’s leadership pushing the island towards conflict and issued a warning of potential “countermeasures”. This statement came during military drills conducted by Beijing around Taiwan.
The Chinese military surrounded Taiwan with warships and fighter jets as part of a two-day exercise aimed at testing China’s capability to take control of the island. These drills occurred shortly after Taiwan’s new president took office.
Beijing’s military commenced the war games on Thursday, encircling democratic Taiwan with naval vessels and military aircraft while making threats against any efforts towards independence on the island.
The exercises began just days after Lai Ching-te was sworn in as president and gave a speech that China criticized as promoting independence. Beijing’s defence ministry spokesperson, Wu Qian, stated on Friday that Lai’s actions were jeopardizing peace and could lead to war.
China views Taiwan as a renegade province and aims for reunification. The ongoing dispute between China and Taiwan has heightened tensions in the region and raised concerns of potential military action by China to gain control over the island.
The United States, a strong ally of Taiwan, urged China to show restraint, while the United Nations called for all parties to avoid escalation.

The military exercises, codenamed “Joint Sword-2024A”, were conducted as a show of force against any separatist movements on Taiwan. China’s military displayed their readiness for combat through footage released to the public.
The drills have caused alarm in Taiwan and among its allies, with Chinese coast guard vessels repeatedly entering Taiwanese waters. Taiwan has called on China to stop its aggressive behavior and maintain peace in the region.
