BUTTE — A late winter storm presented challenges for travelers heading eastbound on I-90 near Homestake Pass on May 23.
As traffic came to a halt, a kind-hearted individual from the nearby neighborhood, Suba Ganesan, took action by placing a large sign in her yard offering assistance to stranded motorists.
Ganesan remarked on the unusual length of the standstill, stating, “I think it’s rare for it to be this backed up for this length of time. We’ve seen the highway stopped before but I think it’s unusual for it to be stopped for this long.”
She displayed her phone number on the sign to help those stuck on the interstate while the pass was closed.
“I’m trying to help people out that are stuck on the highway,” said Suba. From the overpass, she observed a driver attempting risky maneuvers to navigate the traffic.
The Montana Department of Transportation issued a warning at 7 a.m. about road closures, but by 11 a.m., traffic began moving again with an advisory to drive cautiously in winter conditions.
Ganesan, who has experienced numerous late spring snowstorms growing up in the Mining City, expressed excitement about the snowfall, saying, “Oh, I’m so excited for the snow. My boys got up early this morning and we were playing in it and, you know, we love the snow.”
