NBA legend Dwyane Wade returned to South Florida to make a significant impact once again.
During his impressive 14-season career with the Miami Heat, Wade dominated the court, securing three championships and earning the nickname “Wade County” in Miami-Dade County. He still holds records in points, rebounds, and personal fouls for the franchise. However, the battle he is currently engaged in, as highlighted at The Elevate Prize Foundation’s Make Good Famous Summit, is deeply personal.
Before accepting the Elevate Prize Catalyst Award, Wade opened up to The Associated Press, saying, “We’ve accomplished so much here, so it was tough to leave. But the community didn’t support Zaya, so it didn’t support us either.”
Wade’s daughter, Zaya, came out as transgender in 2020 amidst anti-trans legislation in Florida, leading the Wade family to sell their Florida home and relocate to California.
Upon receiving the award, Wade recognized Zaya for inspiring the creation of Translatable, an online platform designed to support transgender children and their families.
Wade emphasized that Translatable, funded by the Wade Family Foundation, aims to provide a safe community that promotes growth, mental health, well-being, and fosters conversations for greater understanding and acceptance. He plans to utilize the $250,000 in unrestricted funding that accompanies the award towards Translatable.
Carolina García Jayaram, CEO of the Elevate Prize Foundation, expressed admiration for Wade’s commitment, noting that their nonprofit also made an additional contribution to Translatable.
Wade’s dedication to trans rights stems from his role as a parent, with Zaya playing a pivotal role in his education on the matter. Jayaram commended Wade for launching Translatable in Florida, a state where many may feel excluded.
During the summit, comedian and actress Phoebe Robinson applauded Wade for using his platform to address important issues and prioritize humanity over personal gain.
Various experts, including Alexander Roque from the Ali Forney Center and Dr. Michelle Forcier from FOLX Health, highlighted the significance of Translatable in supporting transgender youth, especially in the face of increasing anti-LGBTQ legislation and challenges faced by the transgender community.
