As grocery inflation eases, retailers are offering more discounts to attract shoppers back this summer. Walgreens recently announced price cuts on various products, joining other national brands like Target and Amazon Fresh in the trend.
After years of rising prices, the slight dip in grocery prices is a welcomed change. According to the latest consumer price index, grocery prices are still 25% higher than they were in early 2020, but they decreased slightly in April.
Customers have been adjusting to high prices by switching retailers, brands, or product qualities. With overall grocery prices declining, retailers are taking advantage of this opportunity to bring back customers.
Joe Balagtas, an agriculture economics professor at Purdue University, notes that customers spend about 11% of their income on food. Lowering prices, even if inflation slows down, will alleviate financial stress for many.
