With grocery inflation seemingly easing, retailers are now focusing on providing more discounts to attract shoppers to their stores this summer. Walgreens, along with other national brands like Target and Amazon Fresh, recently announced price cuts on a wide range of products from everyday essentials to seasonal favorites.
After experiencing years of rising prices, the decrease in grocery prices is a welcomed change. According to the latest consumer price index report, grocery prices are currently 25% higher than they were at the beginning of 2020, but they saw a slight decrease in April from the previous month.

To attract back customers who have been switching retailers or brands due to high prices, retailers are now taking advantage of the decrease in grocery prices to offer better deals.
Joe Balagtas, a professor of agriculture economics and interim director of the Center for Food Demand Analysis and Sustainability at Purdue University, states that consumers have been finding ways to save money despite rising prices, which has impacted retailers’ profits. This trend is driving retailers to cut prices and appeal to budget-conscious consumers.
Lower prices will have a significant impact on shoppers, especially considering that Americans typically spend about 11% of their income on food in 2022, according to the Agriculture Department. Balagtas believes that even a slower inflation rate will help alleviate financial stress for many people.
