Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson is transitioning from the wrestling mat to the football field.
According to Steveson’s agent, Carter Chow of Red Envelope Sports, he will be signing a standard three-year rookie contract with the Buffalo Bills. The official announcement of the signing was made on Friday by the team.
Standing at 5-foot-11 and weighing 266 pounds, Steveson showcased his skills to the Bills on May 15 and is anticipated to join the team’s defensive line.
“I have competed at the highest level in wrestling and now I am excited about the challenge of exploring how my wrestling abilities can be applied to football,” said Steveson as reported by ESPN. “I am thankful to Coach McDermott, general manager Brandon Beane, and the Buffalo Bills organization for this opportunity.”
The 24-year-old Steveson claimed the gold medal in the super heavyweight division of freestyle wrestling at the 2020 Tokyo Games. He has also achieved two national championships at Minnesota (2021, 2022) and three Big Ten championships (2020, 2021, 2022). Additionally, he has been twice honored with the Dan Hodge Trophy, recognizing him as the top college wrestler in the United States.
Earlier this month, Steveson was released by WWE.
In other news on Friday, the Bills parted ways with left-footed punter Matt Haack.
Haack, aged 29, appeared in one game for the Cleveland Browns last season before joining the Bills’ practice squad to cover for the injured Sam Martin prior to the team’s divisional playoff game against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Throughout his career playing in 99 games for the Miami Dolphins (2017-20), Bills (2021), Indianapolis Colts (2022) and Browns (2023), Haack averaged 44.5 yards per punt.
