Belmont Stakes odds, preview, and predictions for Saratoga Race Course
There will be no Triple Crown winner this year, but the Belmont Stakes is still loaded with impressive thoroughbreds and Hall of Fame trainers. Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan and Preakness Stakes winner Seize the Grey are both expected in the race. The current favorite is Sierra Leone (7-4), followed by Fierceness at 3-1. Read below for a preview of the favorites and long shots:
2024 Belmont Stakes picks: Sierra Leone (7-4)
Sierra Leone gave Mystik Dan all he could handle at the Kentucky Derby but ultimately came up a nose short in a thrilling photo finish. The Chad Brown-trained horse will have the benefit of added rest after sitting out the Preakness Stakes. With the Belmont running at the same distance as the Derby this year, and with a shortened field, Sierra Leone could be the one to beat at Saratoga. His Stakes wins include wins in the 2024 Blue Grass Stakes (G1), and the 2024 Risen Star (G2).
2024 Belmont Stakes picks: Fierceness (3-1)
After a highly disappointing Kentucky Derby showing, it’s easy to forget that Fierceness was the favorite on race day. The Kentucky-bred colt is trained by the legendary Todd Pletcher, who has won the Belmont Stakes four times and the Kentucky Derby twice. Though Fierceness finished 15th at Churchill Downs, his race before that was a dominant win at the Florida Derby. After taking the Preakness Stakes off, we expect Pletcher’s 3-year-old to get back on track at Saratoga.
2024 Belmont Stakes picks: Mystik Dan (5-1)
After winning the Kentucky Derby in riveting fashion, it was no surprise to see Mystik Dan continue his quest for the Triple Crown at Preakness Stakes. Unfortunately for him, he came up short, finishing second behind Seize the Grey. After two tough races, one has to wonder if the Kenny McPeek-trained horse has anything left in the tank. McPeek hasn’t committed to running Mystik Dan but has said that things are pointing in the right direction. The record $2 million pot could serve as added motivation.
2024 Belmont Stakes picks: Seize the Grey (6-1)
Seize the Grey flashed his talent with an impressive wire-to-wire win at Preakness Stakes and enters Belmont with a lot of buzz. He’s trained by 88-year-old D. Wayne Lukas, who has his horse in top form, winning the last two races he’s entered (Pat Day Mile). Seize the Grey’s best races have come at shorter distances, but a shortened track this year at Saratoga could work in his favor. However, the 1¼-mile track will still be his longest race of the year, and he’ll be doing it on a quick turnaround.
2024 Belmont Stakes long shots
The biggest long shot to ever win the Belmont Stakes was Sarava in 2002. He was a 70-1 underdog. Here’s a look at this year’s long shots. Keep in mind, these are the probable horses. The schedule has not been confirmed yet.
