LANCASTER, Pa. — Yuka Saso, the first Filipina to win the U.S. Women’s Open, and now the first from Japan, shared the biggest prize in her sport with both her parents’ countries. Saso’s spectacular performance on the challenging Lancaster Country Club’s back nine on Sunday led to a three-shot victory, closing with a 2-under 68.
As she held back tears at the trophy presentation, Saso expressed gratitude for the care and support her Filipino mother and Japanese father have given her throughout her career. She previously won at The Olympic Club under the Philippine flag in 2021, and now at Lancaster under the flag of Japan.
Reflecting on her win, Saso said, “Winning in 2021, I represented the Philippines. I feel like I was able to give back to my mom. This year I was able to represent Japan, and I think I was able to give back to my dad. I’m very happy that I was able to do it.”
