Ground black pepper sold under the Baraka brand is being recalled over possible salmonella contamination.
Parent company UBC Food Distributors stated that the recalled black pepper was distributed to retailers nationwide.
The recall pertains to 7-ounce containers in clear plastic packaging with a January 2026 expiration date on the back of the label. The recalled product carries the UPC code 8 22514 26626 6.
Salmonella can lead to serious health effects.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that salmonella bacteria causes roughly 1.35 million infections, 26,500 hospitalizations, and 420 deaths in the U.S. annually.
Symptoms of salmonella illness include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, according to the CDC. Symptoms typically appear between hours to nearly a week after infection and usually persist for four to seven days.
While most individuals recover without treatment, those with severe cases may need antibiotics, states the CDC. Hospitalization may be necessary in some instances.
A routine sampling of the black pepper conducted by the New York Department of Agriculture and Markets tested positive for salmonella in certain 7-ounce packages, prompting the recall.
Customers in possession of the recalled product should return it to the place of purchase for a full refund, as advised by the company.
Production of the product has been stopped and an investigation into the contamination’s cause is currently ongoing.
