BOZEMAN — Twelve Montana State rodeo student-athletes are heading to Casper, Wyoming, this weekend for the 2024 College National Finals Rodeo, vying for individual national championships and team titles in men’s and women’s categories.
Leading the group is senior Tayla Moeykens, the reigning barrel racing national champion, who tops the nation in that event heading into the CNFR. In the 2023-24 season, Montana State’s success in the Big Sky Region was evident as the men outperformed their closest rival, Montana Western, and the women secured a significant lead over MSU Northern. Freshman Cole Gerhardt, freshman Wyatt Jensen, and sophomore Jaden Whitman were among the standout performers in the region, with Moeykens also claiming the region’s barrel racing crown.
Montana State head coach Kyle Whitaker expressed confidence in the team’s prospects at the CNFR, emphasizing the importance of individual performances in the format where season points do not carry over. Whitaker highlighted the strength of the women’s team and identified several male contenders with potential for success at the national level.
