We are writing to urge immediate action to address the issue of illegal immigration in Montana. The numbers speak for themselves — fentanyl confiscation in Montana has increased by 20,000%, sex trafficking by 116%, and illegal immigration at our northern border by 597%, with over 10,000 illegal immigrants crossing per month. These alarming statistics highlight two key points: the failure of the Biden Administration to protect America from the surge in crime caused by the illegal immigration crisis on our border, and the need for the Montana State Legislature to step in where the federal government has fallen short.
Rep. Ruben Gallego, D-Arizona, has emphasized the urgency of securing his state’s borders, stating, “every minute we wait means more fentanyl deaths, more strain on our first responders, and the looming possibility of street releases — something that no small community wants.” But as Montanans, what are we doing with the information that has already been widely circulated about our state?

Are we ignoring the fact that what is happening at the southern border can have an impact on a state as far away as Montana? Consider incidents like the Bozeman resident who was fatally stabbed by an illegal immigrant or the apprehension of three illegal immigrants involved in a sex trafficking scheme targeting Bozeman locals. Denying these facts can only be attributed to motivated skepticism or ideological bias. This is not the approach taken by Rep. Colin Allred, D-Texas, who stated, “Our border communities are not just political backdrops, not just places you go to point out problems.
They’re places where real people live, where they’re trying to raise their families.” This is why we are urging you to contact your state legislators and push for a special session where we can come together for a week to address these issues, as many other states have already done. It is our responsibility to protect the population of Montana by addressing these unacceptable statistics.
It is likely that the U.S. Supreme Court will soon be asked to consider the constitutionality of Senate Bill 4 enacted by Texas, upon which our bill in the special session is based. It is crucial that states affected by the Biden Administration’s failure to enforce federal immigration laws have enacted their own laws to demonstrate to the Court that we must have the ability to protect our interests if the federal government will not. The impacts of this issue extend far beyond just southern border states.
