A National Women’s Soccer League club is poised to break an attendance record for the most fans at a U.S. professional soccer game.
Karen Leetzow, the president of the Chicago Red Stars, shared with Scripps News from Wrigley Field in Chicago, where the record-breaking event is expected to take place. Her team is scheduled to play there on Saturday night as they host Bay FC in a match airing on Ion at 8 p.m. ET.

The venue is preparing for as many as 40,000 fans to attend.
This will mark the first major women’s sporting event held at Wrigley Field since the Women’s Baseball League, which inspired the film “A League of Their Own,” played a historic game there in 1943.
This surge of interest in women’s sports is being capitalized on by the Chicago Red Stars, who aim to leverage this momentum.
Leetzow has been advocating for city leaders and others to relocate her team from the suburbs, where they currently share facilities for locker rooms and practices, to the city where they can potentially garner more support from sports fans.
