DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Israel conducted its largest hostage rescue operation since the recent conflict with Hamas began, extracting four individuals from central Gaza amidst heavy air and ground attacks. According to a health official, at least 94 Palestinians, including children, were reported dead and brought to local hospitals.
The Israeli army successfully freed Noa Argamani, 25; Almog Meir Jan, 21; Andrey Kozlov, 27; and Shlomi Ziv, 40, during the operation in Nuseirat. Jubilant Israelis celebrated the rescue, with the military confirming that all four individuals were safe and in good condition. They were airlifted for medical evaluations and emotional reunions with their families after being held captive for 246 days.
Argamani, one of the most recognizable hostages, was abducted along with the other three during a music festival. The video of her abduction, where she was seen screaming, gained widespread attention.
Her mother, Liora, who is battling stage four brain cancer, had previously made a plea to see her daughter before her passing.
In a video call with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Argamani expressed her excitement at being rescued and hearing Hebrew once again. Netanyahu praised the operation and vowed to continue until all hostages are freed.
Over 100 Palestinians, including a baby, were among the casualties taken to Al-Aqsa Hospital. The scenes were chaotic, with injured individuals being rushed in as bodies of the deceased were laid outside. The operation also resulted in one commando casualty.
U.S. officials provided support in the rescue process, with President Joe Biden affirming the commitment to bring all hostages home and achieve a cease-fire.
As the conflict continues, international pressure mounts on Israel to minimize civilian casualties and humanitarian crises in Gaza. The battle for peace and the release of remaining hostages persist as the conflict enters its eighth month.
