BILLINGS — Tyler Johnson is looking forward to this year’s Nitro Nationals Pro Hillclimb more than any other year. He has been involved in promoting the motorcycle hill climb five miles north of Columbus on Rapelje Road for several years.
This year’s event, in collaboration with the Rockwell Hill Climb Series, promises to be exceptional, featuring the 450cc class at 1 p.m. on Friday. The Motoclimb Super Series is also sponsoring an event at the Nitro National at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Johnson described the event as “historic,” mentioning that the total purse for the weekend would range from $65,000 to $70,000. He expects 100 to 120 450cc pro riders to participate, with 115 being the record for his event.
The two-day hill climb kicks off at 9 a.m. on Friday with the 0-450cc class. The 451-700cc class follows at 1 p.m., the 40-plus class at 3 p.m., and the open class at 5 p.m. The 450 Nitro Cup is at 8:30 p.m., and the Nitro Cup X-Climb starts at 9:30 p.m.

Saturday’s schedule includes kids and women starting at 8:30 a.m., followed by the Motoclimb Super Series Round 3 at 1 p.m. The Nitro Cup is at 8:30 p.m., with the Nitro Cup X-Climb at 9:30 p.m. A fireworks display is scheduled for 10:30 p.m.
For the 450 Nitro Cup, the top 25 motorcycle hill climb riders in the world have been invited, with seven qualifying through the Rockwell event. The Rockwell series has traditionally sanctioned events like the Great American Championship Motorcycle Hill Climb and the Big Sky Challenge at the Billings Motorcycle Club.
“We believe we have the best of both worlds out there,” said BMC president and Rockwell official Don Erhardt. “The riders and spectators will have a great time.”
For the Nitro Cup on Saturday, the top 25 riders in the world in the open division have been invited, with seven from the Motoclimb Super Series Round 3 also advancing.
“We wanted to bring together all the top organizations and invited participants from the East Coast and West Coast,” said Johnson.
Tickets are $25 at the gate, and children 5 and under are free with a paying adult.
In addition to the competition, freestyle motorsports athletes will be performing between events, entertaining fans with motorcycle backflips in the air after launching from a ramp and landing, according to Johnson.
“Come out and join us for some fun,” said Johnson. “It will be an exciting weekend with top riders from around the world competing for one of the largest purses ever.”
