US President Joe Biden made a visit to a World War I cemetery in France on Sunday, seen as a response to his predecessor Donald Trump, who had skipped the visit back in 2018 and reportedly made disrespectful remarks about American war dead.
Biden, a Democrat aged 81, is anticipated to go up against Trump, a Republican aged 77, in the upcoming presidential election, which many believe will put US democracy to the test.
On the final day of his five-day tour, Biden paid a visit to the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery and Memorial near Belleau in northern France, where 2,289 war dead are buried, many of whom fought in the region in 1918.
During his visit, Biden honored the fallen military officers with a salute and a moment of silence at the cemetery chapel.
– Trump Controversy –
Trump had previously canceled his visit to the cemetery in 2018, allegedly citing poor weather and concerns about his appearance. Reports also claimed that he called American war dead “losers” and made disparaging remarks about marines who fought at Belleau Wood.
Biden has criticized Trump over these reports, calling him out at public events for his disrespectful comments.
While in France, Biden also participated in events commemorating the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings, which had a significant impact on World War II.
His trip came to a close with a state visit hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron.
