Howard University is severing ties with Sean “Diddy” Combs by revoking an honorary degree awarded to him and discontinuing a scholarship program in his name. This decision comes after a recently surfaced 2016 video showing him assaulting R&B singer Cassie.
According to a statement from the university’s Board of Trustees, “Mr. Combs’ behavior in the newly released video goes against Howard University’s core values and beliefs, leading to the revocation of his highest honor.”
The board unanimously agreed to retract the honorary degree Combs received in 2014. The statement noted, “This revocation nullifies all privileges associated with the degree and instructs the removal of his name from any documentation listing honorary degree recipients of Howard University.”
The board also instructed university officials to sever financial connections with Combs, which includes returning a $1 million donation, discontinuing the scholarship program, and dissolving a 2023 agreement with the Sean Combs Foundation.
An inquiry for comment was made to a spokesperson for Combs by The Associated Press on Saturday.

Last month, Combs publicly admitted to physically harming his ex-girlfriend Cassie in a hotel corridor in 2016, following the release of video footage by CNN. In a social media apology video, he expressed deep regret and acknowledged the inexcusable nature of his actions.
Combs stated, “I fully own my behavior in that video. I was repulsed then, and I still am now.”
A lawsuit filed by Cassie, also known as Cassandra Ventura, in the previous year triggered a wave of similar cases and public allegations against Combs, resulting in a settlement of the lawsuit.
