Moby is embarking on a tour of Europe for the first time in over ten years, with all proceeds from his concerts going towards animal rights, a cause he considers his true calling.
His dedication to the cause is evident, with tattoos of the words “ANIMAL” and “RIGHTS” running along his arms and “Vegan for Life” inked on the side of his neck.
“I’ve been a vegan for 37 years,” he told AFP. “Advocating for animal rights is my life’s mission. Music is no longer just a job for me. It’s a source of joy and solace.”
Moby, whose real name is Richard Melville Hall, achieved monumental success with his 25-year-old iconic record “Play”, selling over 20 million copies worldwide.
Now at 58, he is set to perform in Europe for seven concerts, with the proceeds being split among eight or nine animal rights and climate organizations, with the names to be revealed in the upcoming weeks.
Moby intends to play his well-known hits, predominantly from “Play” and “18”.
He expressed his belief that performing fan favorites is crucial, drawing a comparison to Radiohead who famously avoid playing their biggest hit “Creep”.
His attitude is rooted in his humble beginnings playing in punk bands in New York and recalls gigs in empty venues with minimal audience presence.
– ‘Trump hates animals’ –
Aside from music, Moby devotes most of his time to lobbying politicians on behalf of animals.
He criticizes the current administration in Washington for being reluctant to take action due to fear of benefiting Donald Trump during an election year.
Moby openly criticizes Trump for his alleged disdain towards animals, citing reports of threats to kill a dog brought home by his ex-wife.
His vegan lifestyle stems from a tumultuous childhood marked by personal trauma and poverty.
He explains that his bond with animals developed as a result of his early distrust of humans and their predictability.
While previously involved in direct activism like bearing witness to animals before slaughter, Moby now takes a more strategic approach to his advocacy work.
His efforts span across politics, philanthropy, and supporting young vegan companies, all aimed at shifting societal norms towards animal welfare.
