Undocumented immigrants married to American citizens may soon receive protections under the Biden administration. Scripps News has confirmed that the administration is considering a program to shield this group from deportation.
Named “parole in place,” the program would grant legal status to long-term undocumented immigrants married to American citizens. This program not only allows individuals to remain in the country but also provides them with work permits.

According to CNN, up to 800,000 people, mostly Latinos, could benefit directly from this program. While a final decision on the program is pending, a White House Spokesperson informed Scripps News, “As we have said before, the Administration continues to explore a series of policy options and remains committed to taking action to address our broken immigration system.”
Last week, President Biden announced executive actions aimed at addressing the immigration system after Republicans blocked a more comprehensive bipartisan immigration bill earlier this year. President Biden emphasized, “The border is not a political issue to be weaponized. Frankly, I would’ve preferred to address this issue through bipartisan legislation… but Republicans left me no choice.”

Biden’s new border policies cut time for migrant attorney consultations

The executive actions are designed to reduce asylum claims at the southern border. If the number of encounters at the border exceeds an average of 2,500 over seven days, the border will be closed to new claims until 14 calendar days after seven consecutive days below 1,500 average encounters have been recorded by the Homeland Security secretary.
Although immigration is a top concern for voters, the new policy was met with immediate opposition from immigrant rights groups who announced their plans to initiate legal action.
