UN Security Council adopts a cease-fire resolution aimed at ending Israel-Hamas war in Gaza
UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The U.N. Security Council has approved its first resolution endorsing a cease-fire plan aimed at ending the eight-month Israel-Hamas war in Gaza. The vote on Monday on the U.S.-sponsored resolution was 14-0, with Russia abstaining. The resolution welcomes a proposal announced by President Joe Biden that the United States says Israel has accepted. It calls on the militant Palestinian group Hamas, which initially said it viewed the proposal “positively,” to accept the three-phase plan. It urges Israel and Hamas “to fully implement its terms without delay and without condition.” Hamas later responded by saying in a statement it welcomed the resolution and was ready to work with mediators in indirect negotiations with Israel to implement it.
Jurors in Hunter Biden’s gun trial begin deliberating whether he’s guilty of federal firearm charges
WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) — Jurors have begun deliberating whether Hunter Biden is guilty of federal firearms charges over a gun the president’s son bought when prosecutors say he was in the throes of a crack cocaine addiction. President Joe Biden’s son faces three felony charges stemming from the purchase of the revolver in 2018. Prosecutors say Hunter Biden lied on a gun purchase form by saying he was not illegally using or addicted to drugs. Defense lawyers argue prosecutors failed to prove Hunter Biden was using drugs in the 11 days he possessed the gun.
Apple leaps into AI with an array of upcoming iPhone features and a ChatGPT deal to smarten up
CUPERTINO, Calif. (AP) — Apple has jumped into the race to bring generative artificial intelligence to the masses. During its World Wide Developers Conference Monday the tech giant spotlighted a slew of features designed to soup up the iPhone, iPad and Mac. Even as it tried to put its own stamp on the hottest area of technology, Apple tacitly acknowledged it needed help to catch up with companies like Microsoft and Google, which have emerged as the early leaders in the AI field. Apple is leaning on ChatGPT, made by the San Francisco startup OpenAI, to help make its often-bumbling virtual assistant Siri smarter and more helpful.
Soldiers in Malawi search for missing military plane carrying vice president and former first lady
BLANTYRE, Malawi (AP) — Malawi’s president says soldiers are searching mountainous forests near a city in northern Malawi after a military plane carrying the country’s vice president and a former first lady went missing in the area. The plane carrying 51-year-old Vice President Saulos Chilima, former first lady Shanil Dzimbiri and eight others had been expected to land at Mzuzu International Airport late Monday morning. President Lazarus Chakwera says air traffic control told the aircraft to turn around because of bad weather and poor visibility, and lost contact with it a short time later. Chakwera says the search will continue until the plane is found. He said there were three crew and seven passengers on board.
Rudy Giuliani processed in Arizona in fake electors scheme to overturn Trump’s 2020 loss to Biden
PHOENIX (AP) — Rudy Giuliani has been processed in the criminal case over the effort to overturn Trump’s Arizona election loss to Joe Biden. The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office provided a mug shot of the former New York City mayor and Donald Trump attorney on Monday. It gave no other details. The office of the Clerk of the Superior Court for Maricopa County said Giuliani posted bond in the amount of $10,000 cash. The former mayor pleaded not guilty in May to nine felony charges stemming from his role in the fake electors effort. His spokesman said he will be vindicated.
Baltimore shipping channel fully reopens after bridge collapse
BALTIMORE (AP) — The main shipping channel into Baltimore’s port has fully reopened to its original depth and width following the March 26 collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge. The channel was blocked to most maritime traffic for several weeks while crews worked to remove an estimated 50,000 tons of steel and concrete from the Patapsco River. On May 20, the wayward cargo ship Dali was refloated and guided back to port. The ship lost power and crashed into the bridge shortly after leaving Baltimore for Sri Lanka. Six members of a roadwork crew were killed in the collapse.
The main takeaways after the far right rocks European politics, sparking a snap election in France
BRUSSELS (AP) — A four-day election has shaken the European Union’s parliament to its foundations. Hard right parties rocked ruling parties in France and Germany, the EU’s main driving forces. France faces snap national elections in just three weeks. The party of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, which has neo-fascist roots, won more than 28% of the national vote for the EU assembly, which would make it a key player in forming future alliances. Still, the center has held. Pro-European parties remain the biggest in the 27-nation bloc’s assembly. But it will be harder to pass laws and do business there for the next five years. Environmentalist Greens and pro-business liberal groups suffered heavy defeats.
Alzheimer’s drug that can slow disease gets backing from FDA advisers
WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal health advisers have endorsed a closely watched Alzheimer’s drug from Eli Lilly for people with mild dementia. The FDA will make the final decision on approval later this year. If the agency agrees with its advisers, the drug would only be the second Alzheimer’s drug approved to slow cognitive decline due to Alzheimer’s. Despite discrepancies in how Lilly studied its drug, the panel says it should be approved broadly for various patients with the disease. The FDA approved a similar infused drug, Leqembi, last year.
The Rev. James Lawson Jr., civil rights leader who preached nonviolent protest, dies at 95
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Rev. James Lawson Jr. has died. He was 95. His family said Monday that Lawson died peacefully on Sunday. The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. called Lawson “the leading theorist and strategist of nonviolence in the world.” Lawson and King were both 28 years old when they bonded over the ideas of Indian leader Mohandas Gandhi. Lawson schooled civil rights activists to withstand brutal treatment from white authorities. He shaped the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee to organize the sit-in movement, and he organized the sanitation workers strike that brought King to Memphis. Lawson said decades after King’s assassination that he was still anxious and frustrated because their work remains unfinished.
Dan Hurley turns down offer from Lakers, will stay at UConn to seek 3rd straight NCAA title
Dan Hurley is staying at UConn and has decided to turn down an offer to take over the Los Angeles Lakers, ending several days of speculation about his future and giving him an opportunity to try to guide the Huskies to a third consecutive NCAA championship. Hurley had the option of taking over one of the most famed franchises in pro sports, not to mention perhaps the chance to coach NBA all-time scoring leader LeBron James. But in the end, his stay in the coaching version of the transfer portal was brief — and back he goes to UConn, where he has gone 68-11 over the last two title-winning seasons.
