Hosting the U.S. Open for the fourth time in history, Pinehurst No. 2, a challenging 7,500-plus-yard, par-70 golf course in Moore County, N.C., is set to test the world’s best golfers once again.
Famous for its lightning-quick greens and sandy, wiregrass areas, this Donald Ross-designed course, restored by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, has been a tough test for over a century, especially since its first U.S. Open in 1999.
The iconic moment of the first major at Pinehurst No. 2 25 years ago saw Payne Stewart clinching victory with an 18-foot putt on the final hole, beating Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods. Stewart’s celebratory fist pump has been immortalized in a statue near the 18th green.

Pinehurst No. 2 is best known for its unique greens, shaped like turtle backs or soup bowls, making it a daunting task to keep the ball on them. The traditional U.S. Open length, rough, and waste areas add to the difficulty.
This year’s course features three 500-plus-yard par 4s and one 600-plus-yard par 5, making it a true test for the participating golfers.
