Thefts of charging cables pose yet another obstacle to appeal of electric vehicles
DETROIT (AP) — Across the U.S., thieves have been targeting electric-vehicle charging stations, intent on stealing the cables, which contain copper wiring. The price of copper is near a record high on global markets, which means criminals stand to collect rising sums of cash from selling the material. The stolen cables often disable entire charging stations. Broken-down chargers have emerged as the latest obstacle for U.S. automakers in their effort to convert more Americans to EVs despite public anxiety about a scarcity of charging stations. If even finding a charging station doesn’t necessarily mean finding functioning cables, it becomes another reason for buyers to stick with gasoline-fueled or hybrid vehicles, at least for now.
Heavy snows and drought of deadly ‘dzud’ kill more than 7 million head of livestock in Mongolia
HANOI, Vietnam (AP) — An extreme weather phenomenon known as the dzud has killed more than 7.1 million animals in Mongolia, endangering herders’ livelihoods and way of life. Dzuds are a combination of perennial droughts and severe, snowy winters that are becoming harsher and they are becoming more frequent because of climate change. They are most associated with Mongolia but also occur in other parts of Central Asia. This year the dzud killed more than 10% of Mongolia’s entire livestock holdings. Herding is central to Mongolia’s economy and culture — contributing to 80% of its agricultural production and 11% of GDP. Experts say better weather forecasting and controls on overgrazing could help the country adapt.

Dog fight! Joey Chestnut ‘gutted’ to be out of July 4 hot dog eating contest over brand dispute
NEW YORK (AP) — Organizers of America’s perennial July Fourth hot dog eating contest say the reigning champion won’t compete this year due to a contract dispute. Joey “Jaws” Chestnut has been competing since 2005 and hasn’t lost since 2015. At last year’s Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July hot dog eating contest, he downed 62 franks and buns in 10 minutes. Organizers said Tuesday that the 40-year-old struck a deal with a competing brand. That’s a red line for the Nathan’s-sponsored event. Chestnut fired back on social media Tuesday night, saying the event organizers changed the rules telling his fans: “Rest assured that you’ll see me eat again soon!! STAY HUNGRY!”

A jet missing since 1971 was found submerged in Vermont’s Lake Champlain
Fifty-three years after a private plane carrying five men disappeared on a snowy Vermont night, experts believe they have found the wreckage of the long lost jet in Lake Champlain. The corporate jet disappeared shortly after departing the Burlington airport for Providence, Rhode Island, on Jan. 27, 1971. Those aboard included two crew members and three employees of a Georgia development company. At least 17 searches failed to find the plane until underwater searcher Garry Kozak and a team last month found wreckage of a jet with the same custom paint scheme near where the plane disappeared. While relatives are grateful and relieved that the plane has been found, the discovery opens up more questions and old wounds.
