Major League Eating, in partnership with Nathan’s to organize the contest, did not explicitly prohibit Chestnut from competing. However, they announced that they were “devastated” to learn that he had chosen to partner with a rival hot dog brand, Impossible Foods, instead of participating in the 2024 Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest.
“For nearly two decades, we have worked under the same basic hot dog exclusivity provisions,” MLE stated in a statement. “However, it appears that Joey and his managers have prioritized a new partnership with a different hot dog brand over our long-standing relationship. … We hope he returns when he is not representing a rival brand.”
In response, Chestnut took to social media to accuse MLE and Nathan’s of altering the rules regarding corporate sponsorships he is allowed to have.
“This appears to be the reason for my ban, and it does not affect the July 4th event,” Chestnut stated. “Unfortunately, this is the decision being made by Nathan’s and Major League Eating, depriving fans of the usual holiday joy and entertainment. To my fans, I love and appreciate you. Rest assured, you will see me eat again soon!! STAY HUNGRY!”
Chestnut has emerged victorious in 17 of the last 18 Fourth of July hot dog eating contests hosted by Nathan’s and MLE. He reclaimed the championship title last year by consuming 62 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes — 13 more than the closest competitor.

Consuming 62 franks in one sitting, equivalent to nearly 18,000 calories, is generally not advisable. Comparatively, 28-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps stated that he consumed 8,000-10,000 calories per day at the peak of his swimming career.
However, for Chestnut, winning the competition holds greater significance than most can digest.
“I love competing in that event,” he expressed. “I love celebrating America with my fans across this great country on the 4th, and I have been training to defend my title.”
