Trump refers to Milwaukee as ‘horrible’ just before the city hosts the Republican convention
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Former President Donald Trump reportedly called Milwaukee a “horrible city” during a meeting with Republican lawmakers. The comment on Thursday drew disagreements from those who were there about what Trump meant when referring to the heavily Democratic city that will host the Republican National Convention next month. Trump made the comments during a meeting with members of Congress as part of a visit to Capitol Hill, his first since leaving office. Trump spokesperson Steven Cheung posted on X that Trump “was talking about how terrible crime and voter fraud are.” President Joe Biden’s campaign said, “If Donald Trump thinks Milwaukee is so horrible, then he shouldn’t come to our city.”
Supreme Court, siding with Starbucks, makes it harder for NLRB to win court orders in labor disputes
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court has made it harder for the federal government to win court orders when it suspects a company of interfering in unionization campaigns in a case that stemmed from a labor dispute with Starbucks. The justices on Thursday tightened the standards for when a federal court should issue an order to protect the jobs of workers during a union organizing campaign. The court rejected a rule that some courts had applied to orders sought by the National Labor Relations Board in favor of a higher threshold, sought by Starbucks, that must be met in most other fights over court orders, or injunctions.

Sen. John Fetterman was at fault in car accident and seen going ‘high rate of speed,’ police say
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Police say Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman was seen driving at a “high rate of speed” just before he rear-ended another car on Interstate 70 in Maryland. A state police report said Fetterman was at fault in Sunday morning’s crash. Police say both cars were towed and Fetterman, his wife Gisele and the motorist he hit were all hospitalized for minor injuries. Fetterman’s office has acknowledged the accident, saying he was treated for a bruised shoulder and discharged within hours. Court records show that Fetterman pleaded guilty earlier this year in Pennsylvania to a citation for exceeding the speed limit by 34 mph.
No charges in killing of gray wolf in southern Michigan. Experts stumped about how it got there.
Wildlife experts have hit a dead end in their quest to determine how a gray wolf arrived in southern Michigan for the first time in more than 100 years. The wolf was killed in January by a hunter who said he had mistaken it for a coyote. That was shocking. Gray wolves are common in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, but southern Michigan doesn’t offer the proper habitat. Wolf expert Brian Roell says officials “don’t know how it got there.” Meanwhile, a prosecutor says no charges will be filed because the hunter believed he was shooting a coyote.
Large whale group spotted off New England includes orca eating a tuna, dozens of endangered species
Scientists say a large number of whales visiting the waters off New England included an uncommon sighting of an orca eating a tuna and an unusually large group of an endangered species of whale. Officials with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said Thursday a research flight made 161 sightings of seven different species of whale on May 25 south of Martha’s Vineyard and southeast of Nantucket. The agency says the sightings included 93 of sei whales, and that is one of the highest concentrations of the rare whale during a single flight. It says there were also two sightings of orcas, which aren’t common off Massachusetts.
Puerto Rico restores power after a massive blackout as lawmakers call for a state of emergency
BAYAMÓN, Puerto Rico (AP) — A power company in Puerto Rico has restored electricity to most areas affected by a massive outage that hit the U.S. territory this week. The outage left over 340,000 customers in the capital of San Juan and neighboring municipalities without power on Wednesday, during a heat wave. On Thursday morning, Luma Energy said in a statement that it had restored power to most of its customers in the metropolitan and northeastern regions of the island. Persistent outages have interrupted water service and imperiled the lives of elderly and ill residents who rely, for example, on electrical equipment for respirators and to refrigerate insulin.
One Tech Tip: Use a roaming eSIM on your summer travels to avoid cellphone data fees
LONDON (AP) — For summer trips overseas, a smartphone is essential for most people. How else to check Google Maps to find your Airbnb, or post an Instagram video of the view from the Eiffel Tower? Of course, if you’re using apps that gobble up data while in a foreign country, there’s always the risk of racking up hefty roaming fees from your phone carrier. The solution is an international travel eSIM for your smartphone. Physical SIM cards are going away, replaced by eSIMs. They make switching cell carriers easier. The benefits are especially big for travelers. If you’ve got a compatible cellphone, you can add a eSIM from a virtual carrier that has better data roaming rates than your home network.
Hot dog-eating champs Joey Chestnut and Takeru Kobayashi will go head-to head in a Netflix special
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Netflix has announced a new hot dog-eating contest between rivals Joey Chestnut and Takeru Kobayaski. The news comes after organizers for Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July hot dog-eating competition said this week that Chestnut would not compete because of his deal with a rival brand. Sixteen-time hot dog-eating champion Chestnut will face off with his frequent Nathan’s competitor, known as Kobayashi, in a live Netflix special on Sept. 2. The contest will be called “Chestnut vs. Kobayashi: Unfinished Beef” and will feature the two chowing down on all-beef hot dogs, likely in a nod to reports that Chestnut’s rival brand deal is with Impossible Foods, which makes vegan hot dogs.
