A man from New York disclosed in his obituary that he was gay and kept it a secret out of fear of “being ostracized.”
Col. Edward Thomas Ryan, Ret., originally from Rensselaer, New York, wrote in his obituary about his 25-year relationship with Paul Cavagnaro, who passed away in 1994. Ryan described Cavagnaro as the love of his life, and they had a loving and caring relationship.
In his obituary, Ryan mentioned his military and firefighter background, including commendations such as the National Defense Service Medal and the Defense of Liberty Medal. He also mentioned that he would be laid to rest next to Cavagnaro in a New York cemetery.
“I regret not having the courage to come out as Gay,” he expressed. “I was apprehensive of potential rejection from Family, Friends, and Co-Workers. Witnessing how people like me were treated, I found it difficult to reveal my truth. Now that my secret is out, I can finally Rest in Peace.”
