ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. (AP) — A shooter opened fire at a splash pad in a Detroit suburb, injuring nine people, including an 8-year-old boy who was in critical condition after being struck in the head. Law enforcement located the suspect at a home where the person died by suicide, according to authorities.
Officials confirmed that at least two of the victims were children. Initially, authorities believed that up to 10 people had gunshot wounds, but this number was later revised after checking with area hospitals.
Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard provided details about the injuries sustained, mentioning that the 8-year-old boy’s 4-year-old brother was wounded in the leg and is in stable condition. The mother of the children was in critical condition after being wounded in the abdomen and leg. The other six victims, all aged 30 or older, were in stable condition.
The shooting occurred around 5 p.m. at a city park with a recreation area featuring a water play area with sprays and fountains. The shooter appeared to act randomly, firing up to 28 times at the splash pad, pausing multiple times to reload.
Responding to the incident, Bouchard stated, “People were falling, getting hit, trying to run. Terrible things that unfortunately all of us in our law enforcement business have seen way too much.” The gunman calmly walked back to his car after the shooting.
Authorities were able to reach the scene of the shooting quickly due to the 911 call reporting the incident. Deputies provided immediate first aid, and a suspect matching the shooter’s description was found at a nearby residence.
Deputies attempted to make contact with the suspect, deploying a drone before eventually finding them deceased inside the home. Another weapon was recovered from the scene, and the prompt action of law enforcement may have prevented further violence.
The motive behind the shooting remains unclear as the suspect did not reside in Rochester Hills. A handgun and empty magazines were found at the scene.
Rochester Hills Mayor Bryan Barnett expressed his shock at the incident, emphasizing the significance of a splash pad as a place for enjoyment and gathering.
The shooting serves as a somber reminder of the fragility of life, especially in the wake of previous tragedies in the county. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer expressed her sorrow at the news and stated that she was in contact with local officials.
